Façade of the Grand Master’s Palace 2014

The 2014 Projection mapping improved upon the previous one, both in the narrative and design. It is also heavily 2D oriented with 3D elements boosting the narrative in several scenes. The projection makes good use of bright Christmassy colours, never going overboard or out of context; furthermore the music implemented in this animation was very well executed especially when the elves start jamming to the beats using different toys for each sound.

Most of the projection is dominated by the 2D elves making a mess of Santa’s workshop. The illustrations and animations fit well with the theme they went for, which are flat 2D shapes and flat solid colours. With that being said the animations and illustrations of the 2D elements were different for the most part but the elves had a cloned feeling would have been nice to see a different variety of characters, maybe something like the 7 dwarves of snow white.

During some parts of the animation there where 2D characters interacting with 3D ones. It is very difficult in my opinion to achieve a fluid animation when mixing the two but they achieved it, providing a smooth well rounded merge of the two styles. This mash up can be seen in several scenes whiteout appearing out of place.

Some creative elements were also present, through the use of shadow puppets and also a 3D model generator to create heaps of toys when the machine malfunctioned.

As a final thought the animation was probably the best this school has put out. The illustrations and models were professionally produced. There was a clear narrative that one could easily follow whilst also giving off a huge Christmas feeling of happiness and joy. Also noticed the extra mile put into the end credits, such little details pull everything together. I would have changed only little things, such as one transition, where there is a great deal of moving objects and suddenly the projection blacks out but overall a very good job.  You can view the projection here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CG2CFgTIOJg
